Named by botanist Philibert Commerçon, who was with French navy admiral Louis Antoine de Bougainville. What a coincidence! Philibert's girlfriend, Jeanne Barèt, snuck on board disguised as a man and was, as a result, the first woman known to have circumnavigated the earth.
