The Dutch government does not run the post office. It is now a private organization, Post.NL. I know they have colorful boxes and I have been told that there is no longer mail delivery to every residence. Some people live on islands where the post was at one time delivered by boat to the island, a very time-consuming and expensive process for a few people. I continue to think it is a fantastically good thing that I can send a letter from the end of my driveway to some person in a rural place in Alaska (that's still true, isn't it) for $0.49. But privatizing the post office might not be a bad thing if we can assure that somehow every citizen can get access to mail for a reasonable price. We could also keep Congress from stealing from the post office for other things, and then complaining that it is not being run efficiently and profitably.
